Global energy related carbon emissions may increase by 5%

According to the latest global energy outlook report released by the International Energy Agency (IEA), global energy related carbon dioxide emissions in 2021 are expected to increase by 1.5 billion tons year on year to 33 billion tons.

The report predicts that novel coronavirus pneumonia will rebound in 2021, with the demand for electricity rising from the last year's new crown pneumonia epidemic. The increase in the demand for electricity in the electricity industry has offset a record growth in renewable energy. This year, global carbon emissions are expected to increase by 5% over the same period last year, the largest increase since 2010.

The report shows that in 2021, driven by the global emerging markets and developed economies, the global energy demand is expected to grow by 4.6% year on year, and the power demand will reach the fastest growth rate in 10 years, with a year-on-year increase of more than 1 trillion kwh, an increase of more than 4.5%.

According to the latest data of various countries in the world and the analysis of economic growth trend and new energy projects, the global coal demand may increase by 4.5% in 2021, surpassing the level in 2019 and reaching a new high since 2014. Among them, 80% of the demand growth comes from Asia and 50% from China. The rapid growth of coal-fired power generation in Asia also means that the demand of power industry will account for 80% of the growth of energy resources in 2021.

In contrast, global renewable energy consumption is expected to increase by nearly 60% in 2021, mainly driven by wind and solar demand. According to the report, the global renewable energy power generation will increase by more than 8% this year, accounting for more than half of the global power supply growth, but the renewable energy power generation will still account for 30% of the global total power generation.

In 2021, global wind power generation is expected to increase by 275 billion kwh or 17% year on year, while solar photovoltaic power generation is expected to increase by 145 billion kwh or 18%. The total power generation of wind and solar energy is expected to reach more than 2.8 trillion kwh.

In addition, according to the report, the global natural gas demand in 2021 will grow by 3.2% year on year, 1% higher than that in 2019. At the same time, oil demand also rebounded strongly, but as the aviation industry is still weak, demand is expected to be lower than the peak hit in 2019.
